Speech Therapy Tips for Toddlers and Young Children

How to help your child communicate more clearly and confidently

1. Pause and wait (this is more powerful than you think)

After asking a question or offering something, wait 3–5 seconds.

This gives your child time to process and respond.

2. Expand what your child says

If they say “car,” you say:
    “Yes, a fast car!”

This builds language naturally without pressure.

3. Talk through your daily routines

Describe what you’re doing during meals, bath time, or errands.

Repetition builds understanding and vocabulary.

4. Offer choices instead of yes/no questions

Try: “Do you want milk or water?” instead of “Do you want milk?”

This encourages more expressive language.

5. Limit the need to “guess” needs

Create small opportunities for your child to ask, point, or verbalize instead of anticipating everything.

ABA Therapy Tips for Behavior and Emotional Regulation

Helping reduce meltdowns and build positive behaviors

1. Catch and reward positive behavior immediately

Even small wins matter.
Example: “I love how you’re sitting calmly.”

2. Keep routines predictable

Children thrive when they know what’s coming next. Consistency reduces anxiety and behavioral challenges.

3. Use clear, simple instructions

Instead of: “Can you please go clean your room?”
Say: “Pick up your toys.”

4. Break big tasks into small steps

Success builds momentum. One step at a time is more effective than overwhelming expectations.

5. Look at behavior as communication

Tantrums, avoidance, or aggression often signal unmet needs—not just “bad behavior.”

Occupational Therapy Tips for Daily Skills and Independence

Helping your child succeed in everyday routines

1. Build consistent routines (morning and bedtime are key)

Predictability helps children transition more smoothly between tasks.

2. Support sensory preferences

Notice if your child avoids noise, seeks movement, or reacts to textures—these clues matter.

3. Encourage independence (even when it’s messy or slow)

Letting your child try builds confidence and long-term skill development.

4. Turn routines into games

Make tasks like cleaning up or getting dressed feel fun instead of forced.

5. Set up your home for success

Use step stools, visual charts, or easy-access storage to make tasks easier to complete.

When Should You Seek Therapy?

You may want to consider an evaluation if your child:

  • Has difficulty speaking or being understood

  • Struggles with transitions or frequent meltdowns

  • Avoids certain textures, sounds, or activities

  • Has trouble with daily tasks like dressing, eating, or playing

  • Isn’t meeting developmental milestones

Early support can make a meaningful difference in your child’s progress and confidence.
